Rowena Morse (1870 - 1958), an American theologian, philosopher and art historian, was the first woman to receive a doctorate from the University of Jena in 1904 - at a time when women's studies were not officially permitted until 1907, making her a pioneer of women's education in Germany. Despite social resistance, she achieved a “magna cum laude” and thus paved the way for many subsequent female scientists.
In her honor and in this spirit, the Rowena Morse Prize for special commitment and quality in research and teaching is awarded to female and male academics every year on Schiller Day at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Priv.-Doz. Dr.-Ing. habil. Stephanie Lippmann was honored on 27 June 2025. She was recognized for her innovative contributions in the field of materials science, where she has developed novel experimental methods for the efficient determination of physical, thermodynamic and kinetic material data.

In addition to this scientific achievement, which is reflected in >57 peer-reviewed publications and outstanding third-party funding (>€3 million as PI), she is also very well connected internationally through numerous collaborations. Among other things, she chairs the “Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Materials” expert committee of the German Society for Materials Science and is a member of the steering committee of the Metal and Materials Physics working group of the German Physical Society. She is also distinguished by her strong commitment to teaching.
With the award of the Rowena Morse Prize to Priv.-Doz. Dr.-Ing. habil. Stephanie Lippmann not only honors her scientific excellence, but also her great commitment to university self-administration. The Friedrich Schiller University Jena is thus honoring a researcher who stands in the tradition of Rowena Morse and is regarded as a role model for the next generation of scientists.
In addition to her scientific and collaborative commitment, Stephanie Lippmann is a colleague at the IAP whose open, personal and friendly manner is a great asset to the institute. We congratulate her on this award!
