Welcome to the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Jena!

Our faculty is deeply rooted in a rich tradition of scientific excellence. Since the founding of the University of Jena in 1558, physics has been a cornerstone of education and research here. Pioneers like Ernst Abbe, Carl Zeiss, and Otto Schott significantly shaped the scientific and industrial landscape of Jena, laying the foundation for the thriving research hub it is today.

Today, we offer a comprehensive range of programs in physics, astronomy, and materials science – from bachelor's degrees and teacher training to specialized master's programs such as Photonics and Quantum Science and Technology. We also provide vocational training for aspiring industrial mechanics.

With around 750 students, 45 professors, and over 500 staff members, our faculty conducts cutting-edge research and education across multiple sites in the city. We pride ourselves on a vibrant, closely connected academic community, consistently ranking among the top institutions in national evaluations.

Our research focuses span quantum optics and photonics, solid-state physics and materials science, astronomy and astrophysics, as well as gravitational and quantum theory. This close integration of fundamental research and innovative applications makes the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy a dynamic center for science and education.
