Just a few days after his investiture - the ceremonial handover of the rector's coat, barrette and chain of office - the new President of the University, Prof. Dr. Andreas Marx, took the time for an intensive visit to our partner institutes Fraunhofer IOF and the Institute for Applied Physics. He showed great interest in the diverse research achievements and innovative applications that are being developed here. He was particularly impressed by the technologies developed on the Beutenberg for space missions.

The specialtity of us

Institute Director Prof. Andreas Tünnermann emphasized the special cooperation between the two institutes, which ranges from basic research in optics and photonics to the production of high-precision systems for demanding applications. Three central areas of innovation were highlighted: Freeform optics, micro- and nano-optics and optical fibers - technologies that can be combined as required.

Vital exchange

At Fraunhofer IOF, Dr. Risse presented manufacturing technologies, while our President discussed current research issues and doctoral projects with Dr. Roland Ackermann, Tom Lippold and Timea Koch. The Abbe Center of Photonics and quantum research were also the focus of his visit, together with his new counterpart, Vice President for Research Prof. Thomas Pertsch.

The tour also allowed the opportunity to discuss topics such as international cooperation and the retention of specialist staff. With this visit, Prof. Marx showed that he is committed to advancing his vision of strengthening the university location together with all university members and further developing its excellence.
