Fiber & Waveguide Lasers
The fiber laser group at the IAP enjoys an excellent reputation as one of the most creative laser research groups world-wide, in fact several performance records that now define the state-of-the-art have been set. The success of the group is based, among other things, on an outstanding team spirit and deep knowledge on laser physics.
If you are interested in working in the field of laser physics and joining our group, please get in contact and learn more about available topics, e.g. as trial period in a paid internship or Master thesis. Current themes for Bachelor & Master are for example:- Automated alignment of beam arrays for coherent combining
- Speckel charcaterization in multimode fiber lasers
- Characterization and shaping of femtosecond laser pulses
- Live monitoring and active stabilization of the XUV output power of a high harmonic source
- Multi-wavelength and 3D computational imaging with broadband laser sources
Our service to you involves:
• interesting and relevant topics
• an excellent supervision from internship level up to PhD
• a highly endowed renumeration and
• exceptional carrier opportunities.Current topics

Microstructure Technology
Influencing light with nanostructures is a key technology for the future. Our group Microstructure Technology advances state-of-the-art fabrication methods for optical micro- and nanostructures and provides access to these capabilities for academia and industry.
We operate within over 1500 m² of joint cleanroom facilities (<ISO 4) together with IPHT and IOF, offering the full wafer-scale process chain up to 300 mm.
Our research highlights include:
- ultra-low-noise microstructured mirrors for 12,000-finesse laser cavities,
- meta-mirrors for gravitational wave detectors such as the Einstein Telescope,
- phase masks for Fiber Bragg gratings,
- low-loss LiNbO₃-on-insulator waveguides for quantum optics, covering the spectral range from X-ray to far infrared.
We regularly offer paid internships, Bachelor’s and Master’s theses, and PhD positions, as well as the Micro/Nanotechnology lecture every summer semester.
Current Bachelor and Master topics include projects on EUV plasmonics, high-power optical coatings, nonlinear nanophotonics, and ultra-precise metrology:Current topics
