Information

Even before you need to decide what you want to study, you can get a feeling for the mathematics you will need during your physics lectures in our lecture series of the Pre-Course Mathematics on YouTubeExternal link (only available in German).

Set Up Your Studies in Physics for a Good Start

Starting your studies comes with many questions. This page provides useful information, programmes, and contacts to help you settle into your physics or teaching studies at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy (PAF) at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität (FSU) Jena.

First Steps: Orientation Days and Preparatory Courses

Take advantage of the first opportunities before and at the beginning of the semester: Orientation days (StET) and preparatory courses in mathematics help you prepare for everyday university life, get to know the faculty, and find your way more easily.

Information

Complementary to our Preparatory Course Mathematics, we recommend to you the Online Mathematics Brigde Course OMB+External link. The OMB+ was developed for prospective students who want to check whether or not their understanding of high school mathematics is deep enough, in order to start their studies in STEM fields more comfortably. Note

Do I need special software?

No, in general, you do not need any specific software in our study programme. If there are certain modules with special requirements (e.g. handing in lab reports digitally, or writing programms using Python), then you will be informed in time by the teaching staff and can enter the courses prepared.

A selection of certain software products is offered by the University Computer Center, with an overview given hereExternal link (only German). You are free to use license free software as well, in fact, we recommend for type-setting in particular LaTeX, in case you want to hand in reports or exercise sheets digitally.
