  • Professor (W3 or W2 with Tenure Track to W3) in Optical System Design and Simulation

The faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for the position of

Professor (W3 or W2 with Tenure Track to W3) in Optical System Design and Simulation

to be filled in 2021.

The successful candidate (m/f/o) should have a scientific focus on design and simulation of optical systems, covering conceptual layout, design, optimization, physical simulation as well as tolerancing. This includes excellent research work on modern components, aberration theory, digital imaging and metrology of systems, imaging and illumination applications and physical simulation of the various effects in real optical systems. One of the most important goals in this research area is the development and investigation of novel methods and algorithms in optical design in the field of optical instrumentation. Thereby, a holistic approach and conceptual system thinking considering classical and modern approaches as well as technological aspects of realization are expected. A strong application related approach in close cooperation with the other research groups of the University and thematically related institutes and companies within an existing and growing network is expected. Active contributions to the university's profile line Light are desired. Involvement in academic self-administration is expected. Teaching should cover especially the design of optical systems within the curricula in physics and in particular photonics, whereby the courses are to be held predominantly in English.

Prerequisites for the employment are a relevant university degree, pedagogic skills, a pertinent dissertation and a habilitation or equivalent achievements in the subject area. Experience in the acquisition of research funds, project acquisition and in the implementation of third-party funded projects as well as leadership skills are highly appreciated. In case this is the first professorial position of the candidate, the appointment is intended to be initially on the W2 level and limited to six years. In this case, the transition to a W3 professorship without renewed announcement is envisaged based on a positive tenure evaluation, at the latest after six years.

The Friedrich Schiller University wants to promote women in science and education and is particularly looking forward to receive applications from female researchers. Applications of handicapped people will be given preference in the selection among equivalently qualified competitors.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae with details on the scientific career, a list of publications, presentations, teaching (possibly with evaluations) and successful grant applications, as well as a description of scientific interests and research plans for the future and a teaching concept. Applications should be received by 30 June 2020 preferably electronically as a single PDF document and be addressed to:

  • Full Professor (W3 ) for Astrophysics

The Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Faculty for Physics and Astronomy, and the Thüringer Landessternwarte invite applications in a joint appointment for the following new professorship

     Full Professorship (W3) for Astrophysics

The appointee (m/f/o) is responsible for establishing a research group at the Thüringer Landessternwarte carrying out independent research programs in the broadly defined field of stellar and planetary systems. The scientific profile should be oriented to observational astronomy and with extensive experience in the use of large telescope facilities. Ideally, there should be a close relationship to the development of optical instrumentation.

Successful candidates are expected to have an excellent track record of publishing in international peer-review journals and demonstrated their competence in defining research projects and attracting research funding. The appointee is expected to actively participate in the educational programs at the Faculty for Physics and Astronomy at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena as part of the Bachelor and Master study programs in Physics and Astrophysics. Educational skills and teaching experience are therefore required.

The professorship is coupled with the establishment of the department "Stellar and Planetary Systems" at the Thüringer Landessternwarte. The professor should be willing to assume the role of institute director if required.

The appointment is planned according to the "Berliner Modell". The candidate will be employed as a civil servant with the obligation to teach at least two hours per week at the Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena (in English and German language).

The professorship will be the scientific manager of the Alfred Jensch Telescope. Moreover, an active participation in the establishment of a junior research group on the R & D of optical technologies in astronomy is expected. An intensive cooperation with the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy and generally the participation in the research focus Optics and Photonics of the University is strongly desired.

The Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Thüringer Landessternwarte are striving for a balanced gender ratio at all levels. Severely disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in the event of equal qualification.

Applications with the usual documents including a full CV, copies of certificates of academic qualifications, a list of externally funded research projects, an overview of teaching experience, a list of publications and given talks and a statement about research interests and possible contributions to educational program at the university should be directed until March 16, 2020 to:
