At the moment we offer three different international Master's Degree Programmes with English teaching language. All programmes have a duration of two years and qualify for a subsequent doctoral study. Prerequisite for all Master's Programmes is a Bachelor's Degree.

M.Sc. Physics Show content

In this master's programme, students will deepen their knowledge of both experimental and theoretical physics and pursue specialization in several subdisciplines of physics. Moreover, they learn how to design and implement research concepts in the field, analyze complex physical problems across subdisciplines, and find solutions to these problems. Students may choose from the following areas of specialization: astronomy/astrophysics, solid-state physics/materials science, gravitational and quantum theory, and optics. A total of 16 credits points must be earned in the selected field, and the student must write his or her master's thesis on a topic in the same subdiscipline. Students complete one or two additional modules from the above mentioned areas to ensure a well-rounded education.

This well established multidisciplinary program in the field of optics and photonics is provided and coordinated by the Abbe School of Photonics.

M.Sc. Medical Photonics Show content

This is a new Master's degree program offered by the Faculty of Medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena in cooperation with our Faculty. The program offers its students an intensive training at the interface between medicine and optics/photonics. Students having completed their studies in Medicine or having a Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry or in the life sciences will get the possibility to enhance their knowledge and to specialize in an interdisciplinary field of medicine that relies on optical and photonic methods. All courses and lectures of the M.Sc. Medical Photonics are taught in English.
