Jena LIGHT 2026: Over 100 Experts Discuss Photonic Quantum Computing on the Beutenberg Campus

From 16 to 17 September 2026, the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) of the University of Jena and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) jointly hosted the international workshop "Photonics in Quantum Computing." More than 100 participants from over 20 countries came together at the Beutenberg Campus for two days of intensive scientific exchange on the future of quantum information technology.

From 16 to 17 September 2026, the Beutenberg Campus in Jena became a meeting point for the international quantum photonics community. The workshop "Photonics in Quantum Computing," part of the Quantum Photonics Innovation Hub (QPIH)External link industry workshop series and organised within the framework of the University of Jena's Profillinie LIGHT de, brought together researchers, students, and industry representatives to discuss the role of photonics and optics in the second quantum revolution.

The event was hosted by Prof. Fabian Steinlechner, who holds a joint position at the IAP and the Fraunhofer IOF. A dedicated organisation team spent months preparing the workshop with great enthusiasm and patience, ensuring that every detail — from the scientific programme to the social framework — contributed to a memorable experience for all attendees.

A Diverse and Lively Programme

Over the course of two days, participants engaged with a packed programme: over 20 talks, 36 poster contributions, some laboratory tours, and a bunch of short pitches provided a comprehensive overview of the current state and the next steps in quantum information technology. The presentations covered both academic research and industry perspectives, with a particular focus on the short-term application potential of photonic quantum computing.

Industry Meets Academia

The workshop specifically targeted the intersection of industry and academia. Researchers and scientists in quantum physics and quantum system engineering met with industry professionals and entrepreneurs exploring applications of quantum technology for industrial solutions. Attendees had the opportunity to gain insights from leading experts, stay updated on the latest advancements, and explore potential funding opportunities and resources for research and development in quantum initiatives.

An Atmosphere for Exchange and Connection

Beyond the formal programme, the workshop was characterised by an exciting and friendly atmosphere. The breaks offered ample time and opportunity to widen professional networks and forge new connections. Intense conversations during coffee breaks and laboratory visits created a productive environment for deeper technical discussions and potential collaborations. The mix of students, senior researchers, and industry representatives made the event a particularly vibrant platform for cross-generational and cross-sector exchange.

A Success for the Profillinie LIGHT

The workshop was a great success for the Profillinie LIGHT and demonstrated the strong position of Jena's photonics community in the field of quantum technology. The event underlined the unique combination of systems thinking and cutting-edge photonic technologies that the Photonic Quantum Systems department at the IAP and Fraunhofer IOF brings to the table — and it showed that Jena continues to be an attractive location for international scientific exchange.
